♦ DERMAEVERN (map)
[Distance from Isla Empieza]: 5-6 days.
[Terrain]: Muli-Terrain. Large Island with several small offshoots. Dense Forest to the North West. Sharp mountains to the North. Grass lands and beaches in the South. Burned ruins in the Southern Islands.
[Weather]: Fall Island - the weather is always a bit crisp with warm comforting breezes and lots of sun. The top of the mountain has snow year round with freezing temperatures and sharp winds. It’s a long sleeve weather kind of place but no coat required. Tolerable to a normal human.
[Is the island inhabited?]: Yes! There are three major cities of people.
[If so, what is the culture like here?]: The island has three cities, simply known as the North City, the South City, and Central City. Each city has a major section stone walled off. Inside these walls are for the rich and well off only. The houses in these walls are larger, grand and made of stone. There is a city guard in each of these walled off cities made up of the best of the best local law enforcement. Sectors in the outer walls are always labor workers, poorer and lower class. There are taverns, bars, brothels, markets, trade stands and struggling labor service businesses here as well as over populated homes. Where the three cities meet in the center is the scrap yards, dumping grounds and the homeless or poor. Very little to no businesses are here.
North City:
Built into the side of the Blue mountains and spilling off into the valley, North City is the central hub of stone works for the island. The climate tends to be a bit colder here because it’s a higher elevation the other other cities and being in the shadows of the hillside. Labor workers and lower upper class found here mostly. North City frowns upon pirates but will sell to them as long as money is present. They are very negative towards pirates so be ready to deal with the prejudice.
South City:
The major port city. Though all the cities have ports, major exports and imports come through South City. Major Exports are stone works, statues, furnishing, and Algre Berry Alcohols. Algre berries can be found in the purple grasslands found in the south. A small lavender berry that makes a strong alcoholic, mildly hallucinogenic ale and whiskey. Because of this South City is known as the hot spot of pleasures and fun. Pirates are welcome in the port city of South City with little to no trouble because they bring in new trade and money. Trade is highly encouraged.
Central City:
The Golden City of the island. The least amount of population. Mostly the rich live here, even outside of the walls. The better off take residence here. If you make it big you apply to the city council to see if you are worthy enough to move into Central City. Heavily guarded by the local Guard as well as the world Navy. Those with in the Central City borders are extremely anti pirate and will shoot on sight if they suspect that is what you are. There is no law against it. It IS common law to ‘ask’ a person if they are a pirate or associated with a pirate ship before shooting however. The inability to lie in these cities make it lawful to kill a person for piracy. Thieves and scoundrels native to the city are first banished to the poorer cities or imprisoned in the underground cells in the mountain.
[Island peculiarities]: There are lots of mysterious and unique things to this island, several of which are as follows.
The Island of Truth:
Dermaevern Island was a sight of a political war years and years ago. The upper Central City and their people arguing with the native of the South Islands over treasures found in the islands. Lies flew left and right in the war and no one was positive of whom was right or wrong. Legends state that the Sister Goddesses rumored to live in the mountains descended upon the island, constructing two pillars in their likeness. In the center of the bay to the West entrance is The Pillar of Derm and to a small island to the East is the Pillar of Aevern.
These pillars face each other over the expanse of the island, a bright blue light shooting from head to head, meeting each other. The three major cities are affected by this light. Anyone on this island (unless outside of the light’s rays) CAN NOT TELL A LIE. In Example: Someone asks “How are you feeling?” most of the time people will say “alright” or “fine” but here they will feel completely compelled to spew out the entire truth. “Other than this rash on my butt and the fact that I’m in love with a penguin, I’m doing fair.” The further you are from the main cities and the light the easier it is to refrain from telling the truth.
Local government has used this to it’s gain, asking their citizens questions to determine where to place them within the city rankings. Those who can not fall in line end up in poorer parts of the cities, homeless or imprisoned.
The Pillars of Derm and Aevern:
As stated above, these are two curved statues of perfect stone. It’s said that the Goddesses of the island were the ones that placed them there. The light they shoot connects together making one strong beam of light that forces people exposed to it to only tell the truth. The pillars are seated level at 1500 feet. On top of these elevations stands the 145 foot statues of the Sister Goddesses (Think Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro). They seem to be made of a local solid stone.
Algre Berry Alcohols:
A small lavender berry that is found in the purple grass lands of the South. When consumed the berry can cause drastic illness. When fermented and processed into whiskey, wine or ale it is safe to consume. The major Export of South City and the island. Drinking anything made of Algre berries will cause a mild hallucinogenic feel that lasts for a hour or so. Eating these berries will cause stomach pains, diarrhea, vomiting and will make ones skin turn a soft purple color until it run through one's system.
The Ruins/Burned City:
The South Islands were once a frutive and festive location. Friendly people who lived off the land. A treasure was said to be planted within the islands. Because of this a war started between the mainland and the islands, destroying the lands so badly that to this day nothing grows there. Some of the outer islands are home to the few remaining natives of the islands, more tribal than anything else. Very mysterious and hard to find.
The Great Black Bear of the Forest:
One other mystery of the island is the Great Black bear said to be hundreds of years old that lives in the dense forests of the North West. It is told to be 16 feet tall, grizzled and black as night with sharp teeth and claws. The entire island seems void of animal life (other than small creatures and birds) because most all of it can be found in the dense forest. These animals are said to be protected by this bear. Hunting here is the only way for the cities to get fresh meat, and yet it is considered the most dangerous hurt to enter these woods. It is said that even when this bear has been killed it returns to life, immortal. The Governor of Central City has placed a reward for the death of this “menace” in order to make hunting safe.
