BLÄCKFISK

[Distance from Isla Empieza]: Somewhat far away – a standard ship would take 5-7 days of sailing before spotting it.

[Terrain]: The terrain on the island is, for the most part, fairly pleasant. It allows for the growth of some crops as well as farming, and in general, the inhabitants of the island live a comfortable life. Due to its unusual shape, the island is filled with hills and valleys – as such, it was long ago decided that the best transportation method would be by train. The many tentacle-like extensions of the island are hollow, thanks to the people, who dug out the earth and decided that those tentacles (which were fairly far away from the living area and had natural holes on the top to work as exhaust pipes) would be perfect for more industrial work.

[Weather]: Mild throughout! Though sometimes there are violent storms, where the land shakes so much that the inhabitants start feeling like they are standing on a real, living kraken.

[Is the island inhabited?]: Yes, in spite of its awkward shape, Bläckfisk has a relatively small but fairly vibrant population.

[If so, what is the culture like here?]: Most of the inhabitants reside at the foot of the biggest mountain – usually considered the “head” of the octopus – and dedicate themselves to varied agrarian work. Similarly, the train central station can be found there – if anybody wants to go anywhere on the island, this is where they would have to go first. Most of the fields and farms can also be found here. More industrial work – such as factories – can be found within the tentacles: this is why it is not uncommon to see smoke coming out of the many ventilation holes at the top of the long pieces of land. They, of course, engage in some basic trading with many other of the surrounding areas, including Isla Empieza.

Most people live at the bottom, but a few people of high consequence can be seen at the top of the head.

Although Bläckfisk is relatively small, they do have a governing body made out of a self-appointed Mayor and a few Advisers: all of them, along with their families, reside at the top of the head. There has never been an issue with this set-up, but tensions have been running high lately, as some villagers are starting to feel the Mayor has been abusing his powers and in turn feel it is time for change. If you visit, you might want to be careful not to fan the fire too much, lest you find yourself and your crew stuck in the middle of a political uprising.

Aside from that, the people of Bläckfisk are extremely welcoming!

[Island peculiarities]: Bläckfisk is a rather unique island. When a ship first approaches it, the crew might think they’re looking at a creature from the depths of the ocean – but as they get closer, it will be easier to see that they are looking at land, and not a living animal: the island is shaped like a giant octopus, with many tentacle-liked hills extending from a particularly large and round mountain-like center.
