ARCO DA VELLA

[Distance from Isla Empieza]: A week.

[Terrain]: The island is a huge caldera covered with a dense forest. At the center of the caldera is a lake with waist deep water, and at the center of the lake is a tiny island with a majestic tree growing at the center of that. It’s basically islandception.

[Weather]: It’s nice and sunny with a good amount of cloud cover during the day. There’s also a nice cool breeze that blows through the island most of the time. During the evenings, though, it gets rather chilly, especially along the beach and the lakeshore.

[Is the island inhabited?]: No.

[If so, what is the culture like here?]: It’s basically a giant uninhabited forest filled with your typical forest creatures like birds, bugs, and a giant population of jackalopes.

[Island peculiarities]: Before your boat even reaches the island, it would first have to pass this rather thick fog. By the end of it, you’ll start to notice that all the color has been drained from your vision. Don’t worry though, you haven’t gone color blind. The whole island is just completely black and white.

The moment you set foot on the island, the only possible way for you to see even a small hint of color is to be next to someone you care about (or, if you’re wandering the island in groups, the last person in the group that you touched). Depending on your emotional connection to the person next to you, you’ll see colors at varied distances and intensities. Basically, your heart dictates how you see this island, but this won’t necessarily mean that the person you’re with will see the same thing.

To simplify it:

If you feel you have zero connections with this person or if you see this person as an acquaintance or someone you just know, then the island is completely black and white and you will only see the trees and grass.

If you see this person as a friend or someone you respect, you will be able to see regular colors, most of the trees, a good portion of the flowers living on the island, and the distance would range from a few feet to a meter or two. Depending on your connection to them.

If you have a very strong emotional connection to this person (i.e. you would happily die for them, you are deeply in love with them, you cannot live without them, your bond can last the test of time or whatever, you went to hell and back for them, etc.), then not only will you see the island in its full vibrantly colorful glory, filled with different trees, vines, and more flower species than any island in the world for all we know, but you’d also be able to see a good few meters of it too. You might also notice a faint glow around your friend.

How you see the island would be the key to finding the treasure hidden on the tiny island in the middle of the lake. You see, the single tree that grows there is filled with flower buds that each hold a special crystal. If you pluck the buds as they are, they will automatically wither and die. But if you and someone you have a strong emotional connection with, and their feelings towards you are mutual, touch the tree at the same time, the buds will open up and stay open as long as you and your partner are on the tiny island. Once opened, anyone can see and touch the crystals regardless of emotional connections. Anyone holding a crystal would be able to see the island in its fully colored beauty, also regardless of emotional connections to anyone. They would also be able to see the unlimited supply of scattered gems and gold treasure hidden beneath the lake, as long as they have a crystal with them. All the crystals and treasure will retain their color once taken off the island. But the flower crystals turn to dust a week or so after they're removed from the tree.

As for the people who wander the island with someone they hate? Not only will they only see black and white, but they will also be followed by the jackalopes that inhabit the island. They don’t attack, they’re actually quite friendly if you can get past their creepy stares. Why do they follow you? No one really knows. They just do.
