AQUATICA PARADISE

[Distance from Isla Empieza]: 11-13 days depending on the wind.

[Terrain]: The island is shaped roughly like an oval, with 3/4 of it being smooth and rounded and the last 1/4 (on the back side of the island) composed of draws and spurs and more uneven terrain. Most of the terrain is flat, however there is a tall mountain on the Northeast side. The long axis of the island is North to South and it would take about 10-12 hours to walk the entire length of it. There are also tiny island and natural barriers/sand bars scattered around it. Animals and plants on the land and sea around the island are varied and vibrantly beautiful.

This island is basically a water-themed recreational paradise, with about 70% being natural and the other 30% developed into various facilities. Around the entire island, there is a 30-100 meter strip of beautiful, white sand beaches. The water ranges from pleasantly cool to bathwater warm, and the waves range from tiny and calm to 5-10 feet of excellent surfing/boogie boarding/body boarding height depending on which side of the island you're on. There are cute little crabs that skitter around the beach here and there, and some nice gatherings of palm trees for shade. The locals have set up huts nearby for renting or buying equipment such as towels, beach balls, volleyball nets, chairs and umbrellas, surf boards, and even jet skis and small motor boats! Basically anything you'd want on a beach can be rented, and there's showers, changing rooms and bathrooms nearby. Some of the huts are for food and drink, where you can find standard beachfront fare. There are a few excursion stands too, where you can pay a fee to do such things as swim with stingrays, be taken to nice wild snorkeling sites, or arrange to stay for a few hours at a tiny private island.

Beyond the beaches, the wild parts of the island are covered in a lush, beautiful forest with a multitude of pools, ponds, small rivers and creeks full of sparkling clean water... and even a decent-sized lake with fish and a shack with fishing supplies.

The developed portions of the island are all rather theme park-like. There's a huge water park, with thrilling slides, calm slides, a wave pool, lazy river with tubes, kiddie play area, snorkeling pool... basically any cool thing you've seen in a water park can be found here. There's also an expansive Aquarium with an impressive variety of sea life ranging from tiny colorful sea horses to the large and majestic manta ray. Besides just having captive fish and sea mammals to look at, they also have shows where locals perform with trained animals such as dolphins and seals. You can pay to pet the trained animals in a certain area, or go visit the petting pool which is included with admission where you can pet starfish and baby sting rays.

Besides the pure recreation areas and wild areas, there are a few small shopping and dining districts near the aquarium and water park. These are much like areas you can find near theme parks or malls, with shops and food ranging from cheap and fun to fine and expensive. There's also a couple of small, nice motels if you fancy a night off of the ship.

There's another great facility on the island, known as the the Onsen Sanctuary. Locals working at places on the flat part of the island will be quick to tell you about this place- a sort of resort on the mountain. You get there via an elaborately decorated and welcoming entrance at the base of the mountain. Here you can board an enclosed cable car that will transport you up the side of the mountain on a smooth and scenic ride. Near the top, you will enter the facility which is divided into two sides; the Bath House and the Enospa.

The Bath House side looks much like a traditional Japanese bath house (think Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli) with elaborate and colorful decorations all over the interior and hot baths available with a variety of herbal options. Some are for healing, others for skin exfoliation and softening, still others for restoring energy... the list goes on. You can also order splendid food here.

The Enospa side has a very spa-like atmosphere with calming nature-themed decor, and pleasant music and aromas throughout the facility. Here you can have massages performed, or other spa treatments such as facials and manicures. A few health treatments are available involving yoga or detox options. There is a wide variety of waters and hot springs designed to relax and restore. The springs range from in-cave ones with lights under the water to natural outdoor pools with rock bottoms to ones contained in man made pools with mosaics of colorful tiles under the water. The other relaxing things you can do here include but are not limited to: swimming in the bubbly whirlpool, swimming in a pool where you can hear music playing under the water, chilling in a steam room or sauna, taking a nap on warm rock beds, getting drenched by hot and cold waterfall showers or a calming steam shower, or even just curling up on one of the soft couches and listening to the peaceful music drifting through the place. This is the height of luxury and relaxation on the island, and the entrance fee is correspondingly pricey.

[Weather]: Pleasant and moderate year-round on the bottom area. 90% of the time it's hot or at least warm and sunny outside, with a nice breeze. The other 10% of the time there may be a light warm rain or a few clouds. The weather around the peak of the mountain can vary, however. It gets chilly outside at night, and during the winter and fall months it may even snow lightly. Perfect weather for relaxing in a steamy outdoor hot spring...

[Is the island inhabited?]: Yes. The locals are regular humans, and strangely most of the ones you'll see are attractive ones in their twenties. There are some kids and old people around, but most of them keep to local villages that are nestled on the back side of the island.

[If so, what is the culture like here?]: The local culture is very light and friendly! The locals will gladly talk and interact with pirates and navy alike. They may even flirt with you~ mostly politely, though some can get a little rude when drunk. They try to get the latest technology on the island to bring in more guests, which can be seen in the forms of the motors they have on rental equipment and simple things in gift shops like battery-operated lights and clocks. Nothing too complicated.

[Island peculiarities]: Violence and crime are very low on the island, and for good reason. The locals like to maintain a happy and carefree atmosphere for their guests. This brings in maximum visitors and maximum revenue. So if anyone, including an outsider, stirs up trouble... the local security will attempt to quickly subdue and throw out the offending person(s) by force if necessary. They are trained and armed, but you don't even know the security is there unless you stir up trouble.
